The Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program addresses the urgency of finding permanent homes for children who, for a variety of reasons, cannot grow up in their birth families. Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s, was very passionate about adoption and strongly believed that “every child deserves a loving home”.
Wendy’s Wonderful Kids operates differently from the traditional Special Needs Adoption program because the children are referred to the program by the public agency and recruitment is geared specifically for these children. Traditional families are recruited and prepared, then children are referred for placement.
The Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program funds caseworkers with adoption agencies to find Wendy’s kids a permanent home. The Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL) is our partner in Kansas. In addition, the program fully funds a “Waiting Child Exhibit” that was showcased at the Oklahoma State Capitol in January 2005 as well as other venues across the State of Oklahoma. The success of the “Waiting Child Exhibit” has been fantastic in uniting kids with potential families. To date over 35 kids have been adopted as a result of the exhibit and WWK will again sponsor the 2006 exhibit.
Each October the Dave Thomas Foundation sponsors a major fund-raiser to support the initiatives of the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Foundation. Wendy’s stores will sell Halloween Coupon books for only $1.00 each and each book contains (5) Free Jr. Frosty coupons. A great value and an opportunity to provide a great “treat” to the ghosts and goblins and come to your house each Halloween night. All monies raised support the adoption programs of Wendy’s Wonderful Kids.
Wendy’s is a strong partner with education and below is a brief description of some of our community based PIE programs that support our commitment. Our local franchise is the LDF Food Group and all Wendy’s in the markets in which we do business support these programs.
NUGGETS OF KNOWLEDGE
Wendy’s restaurants want to encourage children to read as it has been proven that “readers” are leaders. In an effort to promote reading, Wendy?s has developed a local school program that will benefit students. The program is called “Nuggets of Knowledge” and encourages students to read book(s) selected by their teacher. Upon completing the selected book(s) and a brief book report, the students will be rewarded with a Wendy’s coupon valid for FREE Wendy’s 5-Piece Chicken Nuggets redeemable at any LDF Food Group franchise store.
OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARDS
In an effort to promote good student behaviors and attendance, Wendy’s provides “Outstanding Student” coupons valid at any of our LDF Food Group franchise stores. We believe that each teacher is the best motivator for his/her students so we provide the incentive and let the teacher motivate and teach. The coupon can be awarded for attendance programs, special assignments, cleaning the room, etc. The incentive is for a Frosty Dessert, which is always a favorite with kids.
FUND RAISING PROGRAMS
To support fund-raising projects, Wendy’s will implement “benefit nights” where a portion of sales is donated back to a school-supported program, such as Band Boosters, Pom Squad, Wrestling Club, etc. The school group provides advertising, usually via e-mail, school flyers and “word of mouth”. Also, the group will help “bus” tables or greet guests, which helps raise more money!
WENDY?S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN
Two seniors, one male and one female, will represent their school as the Wendy’s High School Heisman nominee for a chance to appear “live” on ESPN in December! Applicants will receive a gift card from Wendy?s valued between $5.00 - $50.00! State finalists, State winners and National winners will receive other awards and scholarship opportunities. The Wendy’s High School Heisman is a great program to put on YOUR RESUME for college!

Wendy’s/LDF Food Group is proud to sponsor the Dave Thomas Legacy Award Scholarship to outstanding Hispanic seniors in High School to further their education in college, university or vocational school. Dave Thomas believed in education and “staying in school” and Wendy’s/LDF Food Group implemented this scholarship to recognize and reward quality students and community role-models so they can better pursue their dreams.
The criteria is easy - be like Dave and tell us why you are. Three of Dave’s key characteristics are “Do the right thing”, “Treat people with respect” and “Give back to the community”. The Wendy’s Dave Thomas Legacy Award recipient(s) should display personal characteristics of each of these criteria. The key attributes are honesty, integrity, respect for peers and adults, and a desire to give back to the community and helping others.
